There are many fly patterns created over the past few decades to entice the saltwater species we all seek. The following are some of the more popular patterns used here in Belize.
Merkin Crab The merkin has proven to be a great fly here in Belize.
The bonefish like to take one while tailing and the use is very similar to using it for permit.
Seaducer The seaducer is one of the flies that the tarpon will chase along with a standard
cockroach flie. It's light weight but big profile make it fun to cast in the wind, NOT.
Cockroach The cockroach is the standard tarpon fly and works well here. Colors that work good are
orange, dark purple, and red all on black with grizzled tails. Just get the fly almost on their head and strip it to you speeding it up for the take.
Gotcha Every bone fly fisher knows about the gotcha. This little shrimp-like wonder can produce and is a
dream to cast. It's really just a bone fly but like all other flies, many other species have been caught on it.
Clouser All places around the world have one fly that captures the attention of just about
any and every fish in th area. Here in Belize it's the clouser. This bait imitator with weight gets down and almost every fish in the ocean will chase it. Crusing bones
love it, young tarpon love and even a passing permit will take one now and then. All other species from cravalle jack, horse eye jacks, barracuda, snook, and snapper
will nail this fly. Chartruse is the most popular color but olive and gray work well.
